Mark Kakembo

I commenced my tenure with the Research Renal Institute in the fall of 2022 as a scientific intern. Following the successful completion of my bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from New York University in the spring of 2023, I transitioned seamlessly into a full-time role as a junior lab technician, a position earned through my prior summer internship.

In my capacity as a junior lab technician, my responsibilities are diverse and pivotal to the smooth functioning of our laboratory. I am entrusted with performing preventive maintenance on crucial laboratory equipment, ensuring the proper functioning of freezers, vacuum pumps, and biosafety hoods. Additionally, I am committed to maintaining the meticulous organization of our laboratories, creating an environment conducive to ongoing experiments.

My role extends to hands-on participation in a range of biochemistry-related experiments under supervision, utilizing advanced machinery such as fluorescence spectrophotometers and mass spectrophotometers. These experiments are focused on renal-related studies, aligning with the institute's research objectives.

A significant part of my responsibilities involves the preparation and management of biospecimens and samples for various studies. This includes activities such as accessioning, barcoding, and aliquoting processed samples, ensuring precision and accuracy in handling each specimen.

Furthermore, I contribute to inventory maintenance, playing a key role in monitoring stock levels and initiating lab orders to replenish supplies as needed.

In summary, my journey with the Research Renal Institute reflects a blend of academic foundation and hands-on expertise. As a recent graduate, I am dedicated to contributing meaningfully to renal research within the institute, embodying a professional commitment to excellence in laboratory practices.
